Tracking down Brampton’s Batman

Brampton's Mysterious Dark Knight

Brampton’s Dark Knight

We’ve been talking about “Brampton Batman” for the last couple months at Stadium Comics. Each passing week has brought new reports from our customers and friends about a mysterious figure wearing the cape and cowl while patrolling the streets of our downtown area. Some people have seen him striding past local after-hours hot spots such as Burrito Boys and Sonny’s in the late night and early morning hours. My first personal sighting was about six weeks ago, where he was walking alone – and with purpose – down Main Street past Kingspoint plaza. When I say “with purpose”, it’s hard to put into words but it’s pretty much how you think Batman would walk.

I initially thought it was just an isolated incident, but when I began telling customers and friends alike about the sighting, I started to hear more tales of encounters with what appears to be our very own Dark Knight. Some people had taken photos, others had seen him conversing with Police, or speaking to drunken revelers. Our good friend Shaun Hatton saw him a couple nights ago purchasing a Slurpee from 7-11! Hey, you can’t blame him for that – must get pretty hot in that outfit!

Ricky and I have been fascinated with “Brampton Batman”, and we were discussing the reasons why this past Saturday night while at the theater for our Man of Steel event. We decided that the great thing about THIS Batman, and what makes him more mysterious and cooler than other guys cosplaying as Batman on a regular basis, is that he just kinda goes out and does his thing. There is no camera crew following him around, he doesn’t have a YouTube channel, and he’s not part of some viral marketing campaign (not that we can tell so far – it’d kind of break our hearts if he was). He’s just been out on the streets allowing his legend to grow – kind of like the Batman of Gotham.

We set out on Sunday night to find him, and to seek out the answers to some of the questions he’s had. The weather wasn’t that great – but we figured the real Batman doesn’t stray from a little rainy weather, so why should Brampton’s? We documented our search on Twitter, and all the while our twitter friends encouraged us to get to the bottom of this mystery.

Picture 16

We made about 4 or 5 trips around some of the areas he’s been known to frequent. We drove down Kennedy Road to Queen Street, down Queen to Main Street, along Main Street to the Kingspoint plaza area, and then back again. We decided to do one last lap, and then, just around midnight, we saw Brampton’s Caped Crusader walking – alone, and with purpose – down Queen Street towards Centre Street.

He walked past a parked car as we got closer. They shouted towards him, “Batman!”
“Those people behind me are police officers!” he replied in a stern voice, pointing at my car. At this point I called out to him, and he just kept walking.

Perhaps he doesn’t want to be interviewed, I thought. Or maybe he just thought I was the police in an unmarked vehicle trying to meddle in his affairs. Either way, I was going to give it one more shot. I pulled into a side street a little ways ahead and waited for Batman to come back my way. I have to admit our hearts were racing at this point. Who knew how he would react if he didn’t want the attention.

I got out of the car and approached him. I could see at this point that his uniform was of very high quality, and adds to his imposing figure.

“Batman! Can I have a picture with you?”, I shouted as I fanboyed out a little.

“Certainly”, he replied. “Those are police officers there” he said, pointing to a dark SUV that sure enough had pulled into the side street we were on. Two men got out of the car and began observing us. At this point I don’t know if they were actually officers, or perhaps friends of his looking out for his safety from a distance. We took a picture together, and he shook my hand. He seemed friendly enough, so I asked if we could do a quick interview on camera – to which he consented.

I’m far from the best interviewer in the world, and I hadn’t really prepared questions, but here’s the exclusive interview we conducted with Brampton’s very own DARK KNIGHT!

Still not sure about how the Batmobile factors into things, and how he intends to parlay his nightly duties into being able to purchase one, but I am curious to see how it will happen!

It’s also great to hear that the police department have been somewhat supportive of his appearances in the city. When he was talking about “The Sergeant”, I wonder if he was actually speaking about Peel Region’s Chief of Police Jennifer Evans? Has she taken a similar stance to Gotham’s Commissioner Jim Gordon on our Dark Knight?

Either way, I think it’s great to have a Batman patrolling our city’s streets. It seems to bring a smile to most people’s faces, and it’s something cool happening in Brampton! Now the city has something more than just our comic shop to get excited about!

We’ve got more questions for Brampton’s Dark Knight, and we’ll be looking to get some of them answered in the near future. Until then, we will continue to watch his legend grow!

Announcing our new store and Free Graphic Novel Day!

Published by Kevin on May 24th, 2013 - in Events, News, Store News

StadiumSidekickpng

We are so very pleased to officially announce the opening of our brand new, second Brampton location on Saturday June 29th 2013! And what better way to celebrate the opening of a new store, than with an event like FREE GRAPHIC NOVEL DAY!

Stadium Comics’ second location – our “Sidekick” location as we like to call it – will have some pretty cool things going on that you’ll definitely want to check out:

BACK ISSUES
Lots of people have asked where the back issues have gone from our store at Shoppers World. They’ve moved to their permanent home at our Sidekick location! This includes “bargain bin” comics. The most recent back issues (6 months to 1 year) will still be found at our Shoppers World store.

GRAPHIC NOVELS
Do you like the discount graphic novels we’ve been carrying at our store? Well you’ll be able to find more of them at our Sidekick store!

EVENT SPACE
This is what has us the most excited! Our new store will feature a large event room, allowing us to do the things we couldn’t do at our current mall location! We’ll be hosting events like tournaments, board game nights, midnight book launches, comic jams, workshops, movie nights, gallery events, and so much more! We’ll be releasing an event calendar closer to our grand opening. It’s basically going to be Jay Gatsby’s house, but nerdier.

LOCATION
Our new store will be located at 2 Bram Court, which is in the Rutherford Rd/Steeles Avenue area of Brampton. It’s a location convenient for public transit, and is a short walk to the Grande movie theater, Lowes, and a brand new WalMart that will be opening in the near future.

FREE GIMG_3022RAPHIC NOVEL DAY
To celebrate the grand opening of our new store in grand style, we figured a free comic book just wouldn’t do! Come to our new location on Saturday June 29th 2013, and receive a FREE graphic novel for making ANY purchase that day. The item you buy can be as cheap as that $1 back issue in our bargain bin (though we’ll gladly help you spend more with the awesome sales we’ll be having!)

We’ll have a selection of 5-10 different graphic novel titles for you to choose from. We’ll have a good quantity of them on hand to give away, but you’ll want to come early for the best selection!

Also what would an event at Stadium be without some awesome comic artist signings, and a huge sale? We’ll have both of those happening as well on Saturday June 29th. Keep watching our website and Facebook and Twitter pages for more details coming soon.

Do you like what you’re hearing so far? So do we! Mark June 29th on your calendars now – we hope to see you all there! In the meantime, if you want to get a sneak peek at what our new place looks like so far (there’s still lots of work to do), you can watch our latest Unboxing Wednesdays video which was filmed on location!

Free Comic Book Day will be on Sat. May 4th, 2013

We’re putting together a lot of information about Free Comic Book Day here in this one post for easy access to any and all the info you need about our event which happens right here at Stadium Comics on Saturday May 4th!

Q. What is Free Comic Book Day and why should I visit Stadium Comics on May 4th?
A. Free Comic Book Day is held on the first Saturday of May every year. Participating comic stores all across North America give away comics for FREE to anyone who enters there store on that day.

Free Comic Book Day is meant to promote and celebrate comic books as great literature for all ages, and a true art form.

Stadium Comics runs one of the largest Free Comic Book Day events in Canada. In addition to the free comics, the Brampton, Ontario comic shop brings in several guest artists and creators to sign and sketch for fans. Combined with the raffles and contests, and their biggest sale of the year, Free Comic Book Day at Stadium is one event that you don’t want to miss!

Q. When is Free Comic Book Day?
A. Free Comic Book Day runs from 9:30am-6pm on Saturday, May 4th at Stadium Comics. Here’s our address:
Stadium Comics
Shoppers World Mall
Brampton, Ontario L6Y 1N7
905-451-3751

Q. Do I need to line up early?
A. In past years, we’ve had free comics well into the afternoon, but it’s hard to predict and the best free comic offerings go early. Also, our DOORCRASHER items below are very limited, and you’ll want to be there early for those. HELPFUL HINT – the mall generally opens their entrances at 8am!

Q. Who will be attending as guests?
A. We have about 16 creators showing up! They will be able to sketch and sign books for people in attendance. Visit http://www.stadiumcomics.com/fcbd for all the details!

  • Ken Lashley – DC Comics’ Cover Artist, “Black Panther”, “Flash” (2pm to 6pm only)

Q. What Books can I have for Free?
A. Great question! We’ve provided this handy little video for you below which shows all of the books that will be available on Free Comic Book Day. You can also check out the Free Comic Book Day website for info on each book.

Q. How many comics can I get for Free?
A. We ask that you only take 5 comics per person, and that you not take multiples of issues. Also, and this is important – you must be here in person to pick up the free books, we can’t let you take some for your friend or relative at home. We do this to be fair to the people that have actually come out to show their support, and so that as many people as possible who come to Stadium can enjoy free books!

Q. What’s the deal with the one-of-a-kind sketch covers that will be for sale?
A. The deal is that they are AWESOME. No seriously, they are! Check out this page for all the info on the limited sketch cover comics for sale starting at 9:30am Saturday May 4th. Cost is $29.99 each, limit one per person. First come, first served. Contributing artists are Vince Sunico, Paris Alleyne, and our very own Tiffany Medeiros!
